Richard Griffiths was born in Middlesex (UK) in 1948. He graduated with a BSc (Econ) from University College Swansea and a PhD (History) from Cambridge University. He was full professor Economic and Social History (Leiden University, 1995-2011) and International Studies (2011-2015). He has taught and researched on 19th and 20th century economic history, European integration, development assistance and small states. He currently teaches several online MOOCs and in 2016 he received Coursera’s Outstanding Educator Award for Innovation. His latest publication is Configuring the World. A critical Political Economy approach (HIPE Publications, 2016). In 2015 he established HIPE Research and HIPE Publications to encourage accessible, policy relevant studies that link economics to the real world of politics and society and that serious attention to the role of the historical contexts.
